Freighter travel is a less crowded alternative for crossing a sea or ocean, not using airplanes or commercial cruise ships or ferries.

Freighter travel is the only way to travel across the Caspian Sea. Because of the nature of the trips, there is no set schedule for when boats arrive and depart. From the port of Baku, Azerbaijan, cargo ships normally leaves every 3-5 days towards Aqtau, Kazakhstan. The passage takes around 30 hours for Baku-Aqtau. Passengers have a small cabin, toilets are shared with the rest of the crew and meals are served 3 times a day along with the ships crew. There are no major activities aboard, no wifi, TV or radio. The main activities are enjoying the sea, the weather and the landscape while near port or close to land.
